Autism Research Institute – What You Need To Know
An organisation was established in 1967 by Dr. Bernard Rimland called the Autism Research Institute (ARI for short). He set up the institute as as a non-profit organization based in San Diego, California. The works done by Dr. Rimland brought relief, hope and even recovery to families of individuals with autism all throughout the world.
Prior to the studies of Dr. Rimland, autism was viewed by most medical experts as a disorder of the mind compounded by cold and uncaring mothers. Dr. Rimland changed this concept when he identified autism as a biological disorder, i.e., a problem with the body and not with the mind.
Findings by the Autism Research Institute showed that there may even be some external contributing factors that can cause autism or make the situation worse. These were...
* highly toxic heavy metals from elements such as mercury and lead,
* yeast and bacterial infection
* a deficiency in essential nutrients
* intestinal disorders
* a noticeable intolerance to gluten and casein.
The identification of these biological causes led to the development of comprehensive range of effective treatments by the Autism Research Institute.
The existence of the Autism Research Institute brought many firsts in the field of autism that not even the big-named pharmaceuticals or the government of the US can match. Among these firsts achievements are:
Recognizing in the 1960s the great value of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) training
Citing in the 1960s the benefits of high-dose vitamin supplementation as well as the value of gluten-free and casein-free diets.
Funding research studies and advocating the administration of non-drug approaches to treating children with autism from the 70s to early part of the 90s.
Pointing to excessive vaccines as a possible cause of the “autism epidemic” in 1955
Starting 1955 the ' Defeat Autism Now' (DAN) initiative began to speed up the process for improving treatments and care for autistic children.
The DAN project, guided by Dr. Rimland in 1955 with the help of Dr. Sidney Baker and Dr. Jon Pangborn, was created to give much needed training and information to doctors and health workers so they were able to diagnose and treat according to the policies and practices set out by the Autism Research Institute (ARI).
These trained physicians worldwide have helped many children with autism to fully recover and live their lives just like normal children. Some children have shown improvements that give them the chance to study at any regular schools.
An offshoot from the Defeat Autism Now! (DAN) project are the Think-Tanks and Conferences sponsored by the Autism Research Institute (ARI). These activities gather physicians and scientists worldwide to develop advanced methods of diagnosis and treatment for autism.
The “Autism Research Review International (ARRI),” a quarterly newsletter published by the Autism Research Institute (ARI) provides the latest information about breakthroughs in the field of autism like biomedical and educational advances in autism research. Parents, professionals and the media are provided by the Autism Research Institute (ARI) with free as well as low cost information by mail and on their website www.autism.com.
With all the achievements of the Autism Research Institute (ARI), it has become the center of worldwide network of parents and professionals concerned with autism. Currently, it maintains the largest data bank of autistic individuals in the world with over 40,000 detailed case histories of children with autism from over 60 countries.
It also is a center of hope because of its relentless research into what autism is and how it affects the child. A brighter future for children with autism is possible because of the many breakthroughs the center has tested, published and promoted. Living a normal life is what the center wants children with autism. It started as a hope, and now it's becoming a reality.
